How to (legally) get married in Charleston!
- Get engaged and set your date!
- You’ll need $70.00 in cash only for the application fee and one form of valid identification: driver’s license, original or certified copy of birth certificate, or current passport.
- Both of you must apply in person together downtown at the location below (public parking available in the garage between the court building and the Mills House Hotel, access on Meeting Street):
Charleston County Probate: Marriage License Division
100 Broad Street
Charleston, SC 29401
[EDIT: Due COVID-19, you now go to this link to apply online. Then the application page will be emailed to you on the day of the appointment you make; you must print it prior to your FaceTime or Zoom virtual meeting. A staff member of the Probate Court will witness you both signing at your scheduled appointment time during that FT/Zoom. Once signed, you email the application to the court immediately after the FaceTime or Zoom virtual meeting along with a copy of your IDs]
- Wait 24 hours before

- Get married!
While the 24 hour waiting period is convenient if you’re coming into town at the beginning of the week before your weekend wedding, we recommend applying and getting your license earlier, on one of your visits to Charleston during your planning period if possible!
